Restoration of a traditional sandstone corbel

Edinburgh Stone Repair Ltd recently completed the restoration of this ornate sandstone corbel, which had suffered significant deterioration and damage over time.

The damaged stone was carefully removed and a new sandstone corbel was hand dressed by our experienced stonemasons to accurately match the original profile, mouldings and decorative detailing. The replacement was then carefully rebuilt into position using traditional masonry techniques and lime mortar.

This type of work demonstrates the importance of retaining the original character of historic buildings. Where stonework is beyond repair, we aim to replicate the existing stone as closely as possible, ensuring the new work blends naturally with the surrounding masonry while providing a durable, long-term repair.
